A Few Words from your Commodore

Autumn is now upon us, so I thought it would be a good time to update you all. The Wednesday and Friday series, also the Twilight series, are now over for another year. Unfortunately we suffered bad weather and a low turnout, having said that, the sailing I have taken part in and watched has been of a very high standard.

A few members have been attending championships and national sailing around the country and for this we have to be grateful as they are representing SSC wherever they go and should be applauded for their fantastic results.

In May we had the annual Push the Boat out day which was a great success. Since the event we finally managed to hold a taster day/evening for the prospective new sailors.

June saw the 12 Hour race to which our Junior teams obtained a credible 3rd and 20th place – well done to all of you. Although I must take a bit of credit for this as the 1st team did use my GP14!

A visit to Sunny Southport in July for the Senior Travellers who enjoyed lovely weather and fine hospitality and our Secretary Ted James came 1st in the Veterans class. Well done Ted!

The Junior training was enjoyed by all our younger members during the summer holidays. Many thanks to Paul Harris and all his team for running this and all the training he commits to throughout the year.

Our August Bank Holiday Pilgrimage to Bassenthwaite was well attended and our in-house entertainer Greg Thomas didn’t let us down. Although he did have some stiff competition from Harry Thomas Jr.
I must thank Chris Griffiths for his time in providing us with a galley for the past year and sorting out a rota – thanks Chris

The 24 hour race is now looming with this year being the 50th anniversary race. The numbers are already well up on previous years and it is a great opportunity for us to make a few pounds for the club. Albeit in Camping, Galley and the Bar. This is where you come in WE NEED YOU!

Whether you can cook, serve on the galley or the bar, look after the gate, or generally help out for just an hour or more, your efforts would be most appreciated. If you could send a text or phone to volunteer that would also be appreciated to:-

  • Lesley Knowles (Galley) 01704 570696 or 07790 335685
  • Paul Norton (For anything else) 01704 562938 or 07770 845598

We lost our Website earlier on in the year, it’s great to have it back thanks to all the hard work from Matt Harris.
